Ardsley LOWCOUNTRY
Rock gARDEN
The Ardsley rockscape was one of collaboration, clean lines, and quiet nods to the plants of the lowcountry. The client asked us to build a scape that was different from that which you see in the neighborhood and also easily maintained with his busy travel schedule. We designed a green space that used a variety of palms as foundation plants and grasses as accents between them. The palms at the front of the walk will grow bushy, while in time the grasses—and then the palms toward the house—will grow larger.
This will create a cascading effect that leads guest up to the front door in a verdant, welcoming manner. The grasses used—in addition to the stones—draws from Japanese rock gardens, while bringing to the house a level of modernity that the azaleas and other shrubs did not. The placement of the plants and the openness of the white spaces bring power to the pause and puts the beauty of the plants on display. The result is a clean, low maintenance space that will grow into a grassy, frond-y scape that will sway in the breeze and cast Savannah shadows on the property.
